We have seen many people confused between a teapot and a tea kettle. In the worst case scenario, many people have made the mistake of buying a teapot when they need a tea kettle and vice versa. To save you from making the same mistake, we’re going to tell you some key differences between a teapot and a tea kettle.
A tea kettle, to put it simply, is an appliance used for boiling water. Don’t let the word “tea” in it trick you, putting leaves in “tea” kettles is a big no-no.
A teapot, meanwhile, can’t be exposed to a direct heat source. While there are certain exceptions to this, the majority of teapots will crack, or worse, explode if they make contact with high heat. You need to heat the water in the tea kettle beforehand and let it sit for a few minutes or so. Only then can you pour the hot water into the teapot. Of course, the tea leaves or tea bag will go into the teapot.

How to Pick the Best Teapot?
Ever find yourself overwhelmed with the sheer amount and variety of teapots available nowadays? Ever buy a teapot solely for its appearance only to be sorely disappointed when it turns out that the teapot doesn’t work as finely as it looks? Hopefully, with our buying guide, you’ll be able to find the “one teapot to rule them all” for yourself.
The first thing you should think about is the size or the capacity of the pot. Think about how much you usually drink, whether you drink it with your beloved ones or alone, etc. This is a question only you know the answer to, so we’ll leave this to you.
Material is another important factor. Different materials have different characteristics, and as such, some people’s favorites are despised by others. To know what material type you would prefer, you can scroll down to see the descriptions of each material below in the FAQ section. Again, there’s no right answer to this question as it is entirely up to users’ needs and preferences.
Next, you need to have a look at the teapot chamber. It needs to be big enough so that your tea leaves can have abundant space to expand, and the water can circulate freely. To judge if the teapot chamber is qualified or not, see if its height and breadth are roughly the same. However, in our opinion, the wider the chamber is, the better your teapot will be. You can also determine the quality of your teapot’s chamber by looking at the tea once you’re done brewing it. If it seems like the leaves are fighting for room in the chamber, then chances are that your teapot chamber might be a tad too small.
Okay, now one last question – do you want your teapot to have an infuser? If your answer is no, then you’re ready to take on the challenge of buying a teapot. If your answer is yes, then you probably need to stick around for a little bit longer.
Like the teapot chamber, your infuser needs to be spacious enough for the tea leaves to expand freely. And if your leaves can’t fully expand, they will not release their full flavor, resulting in a flat-tasting tea. And no one likes a cup of flat tea.
FAQs
What type of teapot makes the best tea?
For many people, especially tea lovers, a good cup of tea is also determined by what sort of teapot it is brewed in. Teapots come in different shapes and sizes, and they are made of different materials. Each material has its own strengths and weaknesses that may either make or break your favorite beverage.
- Earthenware: Traditionally used in China and some other Asian countries, this type of teapot is famously known to be able to absorb a little bit of tea extract every time you brew in it. Therefore, after a long time of being in use, this dense teapot can have the aroma and flavor of previously brewed tea. No matter how carefully you rinse the teapot after each use, it will still retain some flavor. It is for these reasons that you are recommended to use only one type of tea for one particular teapot.
- Glass: Glass teapots take up a large part of the teapot market and are favored by many people. Elegant, classy, and highly-refined, glass teapots are a go-to choice for those who like blooming tea flowers. They make an ideal teapot for your tea party with your lady friends. However, glass teapots tend to be on the fragile side and are prone to breaking even though they are usually made of durable heat-resistant borosilicate glass.
- Ceramic: Probably the most favored teapot material, and it’s for good reasons. It is heat resistant, which means that it will not break easily; it can retain heat reasonably well, and it does not absorb flavors like earthenware does.
- Porcelain: One of the best materials for tea (there’s even a song about it), porcelain is highly treasured because of its non-porous nature, which means that it can hold heat exceptionally well and it is also very easy to clean. Even though it’s most suitable for white and green tea, it can go with other types of tea as well.
- Cast Iron: Apparently, cast iron is the primary material for traditional Japanese teapots. They are highly rust-resistant and heavy. They have a rugged and attractive look that many adore. Even though cast iron takes a long time to heat up, at the same time, they can retain heat for a surprisingly long amount of time. However, you need to make sure your cast iron teapot is glazed with an enamel coating on the inside. We’re pretty sure you wouldn’t want your tea to have a weird metallic taste in it.
With all of that being said, there’s no definite answer to the question, “What type of teapot makes the best tea?”. It all depends on your needs, personal preferences, and the type of tea you use. If you’re a big tea enthusiast, maybe you can get one of every kind.
How do you make tea with a teapot?
First thing first, before you go right into boiling your water, determine whether it’s hard water or not. Hard water has calcium in it, which can create a reaction with the tannin in tea that will ruin the flavor of your drink. If you live in a hard water area, get a water filter for that tastiest tea.
Most tea leaves require below boiling point water. The only three exceptions to this are black, rooibos, and pu-erh teas. Many people are very particular about their drinks, if you need to know the exact water temperature for your tea leaves, you can have a look at the table below.
Brewing Tea | Dosage (teaspoon) | Temperature | Steeping Time |
Green Tea | 1 | 80-85°C
(176-185°F) |
1-3 mins |
Black Tea | 1 | 95-98°C
(203-208°F) |
3-5 mins |
Hibiscus | 1.5 | 70-75°C
(158-167°F) |
5-7 mins |
Oolong | 1 | 80-95°C
(158-167°F) |
2-4 mins |
White Tea | 1.5 | 70-75°C
(158-167°F) |
1-3 mins |
Pu-erh Tea | 1 | 95-98°C
(203-208°F) |
5-7 mins |
Rooibos | 2 | 95-98°C
(203-208°F) |
8-10 mins |
Mate | 4 | 75-80°C
(167-176°F) |
2-3 mins |
If you’re not too sure how much tea leaves you should be using, you can have one teaspoon of leaves for every cup of tea. If you prefer a stronger tea, then the best choice is to use more tea leaves.
Many believe that steep tea for a longer time will result in a more robust cup of tea. However, this is not the case as longer steeping time only makes your tea more bitter.
You can consult the table above to know how much time you should be steeping your tea.
Once your tea is all set and ready for your enjoyment, you can pour the tea into your cup. Should you dislike tea leaves in your cups, you can pour the tea through a strainer (if your teapot doesn’t have an infuser).
We’d recommend that you preheat your teapot before pouring hot water into it. A preheated teapot will be able to retain the heat much longer than a non-preheated one.
Are metal tea infusers safe?
Most tea infusers are made of stainless steel, and unlike some other metals like aluminum, stainless steel will not leach harmful chemicals into your drink. As long as you keep your infuser clean and rust-free, you can rest assured that your infuser is as safe as it can get.
Can a ceramic teapot go on the stove?
Ceramics are, by nature, can withstand high temperatures. However, it doesn’t mean that it will be ideal to put a ceramic teapot onto a stove as there is bound to be uneven heating. If your ceramic isn’t of very high quality, the uneven heating can lead your teapot to crack.
So to give you a quick answer, if the manufacturer doesn’t say anything about it being compatible with a stove, then it’s best not to try your luck.
How do I keep my teapot hot?
Assuming that yours is not a (double-walled) insulated teapot, we think the following are some ways you can prolong the warmth of your tea.
Preheat Your Teapot and Cups
As mentioned above, preheating your pot is an excellent idea to keep your tea hot for a long time. The same can be applied to your cup, you should preheat it before you pour any tea in.
Use a Cozy
Cozies are your teapot’s sweater, they will keep your tea well insulated. A lot of teapots come with a cozy that will fit them like gloves. If your teapot doesn’t have one, you can find one on Amazon, or if you’re crafty enough, you can make your teapot a lovely cozy place to keep it all warm and cozy.
Get a Warmer
One of the advantages of technology is that there are particular inventions that you never know you need until you do – a tea warmer is one of those.
A tea warmer is the right choice if you want to keep your tea warm for as long as you wish to. Tea warmers vary, ranging from simple candle stands to electric warmers. They are relatively cheap and easy to use, so you can consider getting one right today.
Our prime choice today is the Hiware 1000ml Glass Teapot. It is versatile, durable, and beautiful in design. This teapot will be a great addition to your teapot collection.
